The Impact of Healthcare it on Clinical Quality, Productivity and Workers

Adoption of health information and communication technologies (“HICT”) has surged over the past two decades. We survey medical economic literature on HICT adoption its impact clinical outcomes, productivity labor. find that improves outcomes lowers healthcare costs, but (i) effects are modest so far, (ii) it takes time for these to materialize, (iii) there is much variation in impact. More evidence causal needed guide further adoption. There little econometric work directly investigating labor, what suggests no substantial negative employment earnings. Overall, while “exceptional” many ways, we struck by similarities wider findings ICT stressing importance complementary factors (e.g. management skills) determining impacts.
